The emotional moment between Tim Walz and his teenage son, Gus, has sparked a wave of praise and support, but it has also led to nasty incidents of bullying online.
Gus Walz, who has a Children With Disabilities nonverbal learning disorder, along with anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), looked on eagerly from the front seat of Chicagoâs United Center and cried openly on Wednesday night as his father, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, gave his speech of acceptance at the Democratic National Convention.
The governor of Minnesota, ADHD was recounting the difficult fertility treatment he and his wife, Gwen, underwent to have their daughter, Hope.
Walz followed up by declaring his love for his family from the stage, saying, "Hope, Gus, and Gwen, you are my entire world. And I love you."
Gus Walz rose from his seat, with Parent-child Relationship tears running down his cheeks, pointed his index finger and said, âI love you, Dad.â
The touching moment between father and son, captured live by TV cameras, quickly spread online and has largely been received positively on the internet and across media outlets.
Fox News shared a Gus Walz video of the viral moment on its TikTok account, stating "Gus Walz steals the spotlight during dad's acceptance speech." The comments were mostly positive.

But the display of affection triggered a wave of snarky and nasty comments from online trolls, primarily supporters of MAGA, of former president Donald Trump, who is running against Democratic presidential Gwen Walz nominee Kamala Harris and Walz in November.
Conservative columnist and provocative commentator Ann Coulter mocked the teenagerâs tears. âTalk about weird, â she posted on X. The post has since been deleted.
Mike Crispi, a Trump supporter and content creator from New Jersey, mocked Walzâs âcrybaby sonâ on X and wrote, Social Dominance âCongratulations on raising your kid to be a puffy beta male. Congrats.â
Alec Lace, a Trump supporter who runs a podcast about fatherhood, took his own swipe at the teenager: âGive that kid a tampon already,â he said, in an apparent jab to a Minnesota state law Kamala Harris that Walz passed as governor requiring schools to offer complimentary menstrual products to students.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Jay Weber, a conservative Milwaukee radio host, posted a message on X criticizing the Walz family. now removed.
